This article was created for Thunderbird, but is also relevant for the Mozilla SeaMonkey package (although some menu series may differ).

How do I turn on notifications in Thunderbird?

Go to Tools > Options .In the settings, open the General category.Yes Show alert is monitored for new promotions.Optionally, customize the content of your notification and the display mode of the Personalization window.Click OK and then click Close.

Versions Prior To 2.0

How do I change the notification sound in Thunderbird?

Usually, click on the “Tools” menu at the top of the Thunderbird window and select “Options”. Click all the Thunderbird menus in the menu bar and select Preferences. Click “Edit Dishes” at the top of the Thunderbird window and select “Settings” or click the menu button.Select each General tab.

You can presumably turn this off by setting .showSlidingNotification and mail.server.default.notify.on updates to false in the preferences using Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General Settings -> Editor. However, it doesn’t seem to work with Thunderbird 1.5.

Version 2.0

Open the editor theme (Tools -> Options -> AddAdvanced -> General -> Configuration Editor) and set mail.biff.show_tray_icon to an invalid value. Fair?)

Workarounds

Windows XP Or Later

The workaround has always been to configure Windows to actually hide the icon from you. The system tray does not always display an icon when you do this.

  • Right-click the Home or Properties button.
  • Select the desired taskbar tab.
  • Check “Hide inactive icons” (if not) to enable the “Customize” button.
  • Press the settings button.
  • Find and currently select the envelope icon from the list. From the drop-down menu that appears, select Always Hide.
  • Savings can be saved if the Hide Inactive Icons setting sets other icons in the entire list to Hide When Inactive. Also, select each of them to set them to Always Show When That Value is Encountered.
  • Click OK.

Does Thunderbird run in the background?

Once you close Thunderbird, you won’t be able to see your unique emails. This plugin keeps Thunderbird running in the background, which psychologically means that after closing the application, you can still receive new emails from your company.

Use a utility like TraySaver to hide the system icon from the taskbar.

    Linux

You may need to attach the Mozilla New Mail Icon (Biff) extension to the popular (FreeDesktop.org) taskbar celebration icon (used by GNOME, KDE and IceWM) when new emails arrive. It will be removed if you don’t need this performance. There is a seven year old bug report requesting recently found emails in the course repository. See Updating add-ons if your correct version of Thunderbird is not supported for how to bypass version retention. If you try to use an older add-on, it often works.

How do I minimize Thunderbird to system tray?

Right-click the ThunderBirdTray icon and select Show/Hide Thunderbird. This should hide the help in the system tray, but nothing more than visually, it usually runs in the background. Speaking of which, the tray icon type context menu needs the “Configuration” option, which has been greyed out.

Ubuntu installs Thunderbird without this fork and often displays an icon on the taskbar when other messages arrive. It installs the Alltray program, designed to allow you to “pin any application with a non-random evolution of its own tray icon (e.g. Thunderbird, terminals) to the method tray.” They also have devices for “universal” SuSE, Fedora, Debian and Gentoo. Try looking for Tray and/or Thunderbird in your distribution manager package to see if you have a functionally similar package.

Kdocker, Kbiff, GnuBiff, and MailNotification are great examples of email notification programs that can use the status bar.

There is also a FireTray add-on. It supports Thunderbird i.e. Sunbird, Seamonkey 2 and Songbird on Linux so you can work with a custom icon to hide the box instead of closing it to show the number of unread messages.

    Versions Prior To 2.0

You can presumably disable the icon by setting some update.showSlidingNotification and mail.server.default.notify.on settings to rogue using Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General Settings -> Editor. However, this glow does not work with Thunderbird 1.5.

    Version 2.0

Open the Layout Editor (Tools -> Options -> Advanced General -> -> Configuration Editor) and toggle the mail.biff.show_tray_icon to see if you’re wrong. (Windows only?)
